  • Twinned with Donaueschingen since 1995.
  • Located approx. 9,000 km from Donaueschingen.
  • Around 300 km to the north of Tokyo on the main Japanese island of Honshu (Yamagata prefecture).
  • Impressive scenery at the foot of the Zaō mountain range and the confluence of the Sugawa and Maegawa rivers.

History
The healing powers of the hot springs (onsen) were discovered in 1458. Continual development as a spa and relaxation resort. Merging of smaller townships to form the city of Kaminoyama in 1954.

Tourist destinations/sights
Kaminoyama castle (reconstructed in 1982) with its local history museum; Mokichi Saito Memorial Museum (this extremely famous Japanese poet was born in Kaminoyama); museums, gardens.

Special festivals take place all year round:
These include the Kagokaki-Ekiden at the end of April/start of May (gentle relay races in historic garb), Hangasa festival on 3-4 August (procession of flower-adorned dancers), Kakashi festival (scarecrow festival) at the start of September.

Special features
One of the most famous onsen (hot spring resorts) in Japan, 77 hotels, rice, fruit and vegetable cultivation. A local speciality: sweet cherries. The Zaō mountain range, which lies 20 km from the town, is a majestic mountainscape, which attracts winter sports enthusiasts in their masses in winter.

Traffic connections
Kaminoyama enjoys good connections to the road network and can be reached by high-speed shinkansen from Tokyo as well as by plane from the airport in the neighbouring town of Yamagata.
