  • Twinned with Donaueschingen since 1964.
  • Located around 160 km from Donaueschingen.
  • Situated to the north-west of Strasbourg, at the foot of the Vosges.
  • Though just 4 km in length, with the Col de Saverne national road, railway line and Marne-Rhine Canal, the Vosges mountain range forms a natural pass.
  • Around 11,000 inhabitants.

  • Located at 200 m above sea level; Hohbarr medieval castle and the Saverne Pass lie at around 400 , above sea level.

History
The Romans and Franks already took advantage of the favourable location at the passage through the Vosges. The former residence of the bishops of Strasbourg from the early 15th century through to the French Revolution.

Tourist destinations/sights
Rohan Castle (mighty pillars line the northern facade overlooking the park); Gallo-Roman Museum; typical Alsatian half-timbered houses in the town centre with stunning bay windows; 15th century Roman Catholic church with a stellar vault, stained glass windows, bishops’ graves and ornate interiors; former Franciscan monastery with a cloister that is well worth a visit; rose gardens: first laid out in 1898, Saverne’s rose gardens cover around 1.5 hectares and are a blaze of colour in the summer months (June until September), featuring some 8,500 rose bushes of 550 different varieties.

Surrounding area
  • Botanical gardens: featuring an arboretum, alpinum (stone garden) and peat bog. Famous for its ferns and a meadow with local orchids.
  • "Karlssprung" (viewpoint)
  • Hohbarr castle ruins, offering fabulous panoramic views – “the eye of the Alsace”.
  • St. Jean-Saverne monastery, a 12th century church.
  • Saint-Louis/Arzviller inclined plane: the inclined plane and machine room can be visited from April until November. Experience the inclined plane in action during a short boat trip.
  • Crystal factory in Hartzviller – watch the crystal polishers at work here.
  • Former abbey church in Marmoutier, just a few kilometres to the south of Saverne. The church counts among the most beautiful examples of Roman architecture in Alsace.
